Lens Implants

IOLsAs part of cataract surgery, we replace the lens that was removed with an artificial lens or IOL. The first Lens Implant was performed in England in 1949. Some British fighter pilots returning from the war had tiny bits of fighter plane windshield material embedded in their eyes. It was noted that the eyes remained comfortable and quiet. Further research confirmed that the plastic used to make the fighter windshields made an excellent lens implant material. Many advances have been made in IOLs since those early days. Several new materials and many new designs have been developed. Eye Surgery Associates uses tiny foldable lenses. These IOLs allow the cataract operation to be performed through such a small incision that sutures are unnecessary. Recuperation is brief, and normal vision restored promptly.
